Boy Scouts of America
Fundraising Appeal - Direct Mail
I. About the Project
-
🎯 The Challenge
For almost 100 years, the Stonewall Jackson Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America has been committed to making sure every child has an opportunity to join Scouting. My challenge was to design a comprehensive direct mail campaign to drive donations and community engagement. The campaign needed to feel fresh and modern while respecting the organization's legacy. Ultimately, this effort helped drive an 8% YoY increase in membership, defying a trend of national decline.

👤 My Role
Lead Designer
Print Layout, Direct Mail Strategy, Production Design, Variable Data Preparation
-
⚙️ My Process
- Package Architecture: I mapped and designed a full suite of direct mail assets, ensuring a cohesive brand experience from the mailbox to the donation reply envelope.
- Editorial Design: I developed high-impact informational brochures, flyers, and personalized appeal letters utilizing strict typographical hierarchies to make the donation ask clear and compelling.
- Print Production: I built press-ready files for complex physical assets, including custom-sized window envelopes, tear-off coupons, and promotional bumper stickers, ensuring flawless execution on press.
II. Outer Envelopes
First Impressions in the Mailbox
To increase initial open rates, I designed custom window envelopes featuring dynamic hero imagery and compelling teaser copy. By breaking away from generic institutional mailers, these designs immediately establish the human impact of the campaign before the envelope is even opened.
III. The Appeal
Structured Storytelling
The core of the package is a personalized appeal letter. I designed the layout to accommodate dynamic variable data while using strategic bolding and highlighting to guide the reader's eye toward the most critical statistics and the core donation ask.
IV. Impact Collateral
Visualizing Local Impact & Transparency
The full-color SJAC brochure serves as the centerpiece of the informational packet. I utilized strong, emotive photography and clear infographic elements to break down exactly how donor contributions fund local youth programs, camps, and council operations. In fundraising, financial transparency builds trust; this piece validates the donation ask by showing the tangible, local results of their support.
Leveraging Legacy & Credibility
To complement the local impact brochure, I designed a two-sided informational flyer highlighting the national legacy of the Boy Scouts. By featuring notable alumni, this piece taps into a sense of aspiration and institutional credibility. I relied on a clean, structured typographical hierarchy to ensure this text-heavy document remained highly readable while reinforcing the long-term value of investing in the organization.
V. Reply Mechanics & Donor Incentives
Frictionless Returns (BRE)
A clean Business Reply Envelope minimizes friction in the donation process. I incorporated urgency-driving copy ("PLEASE RUSH") to prompt immediate action, and strategically placed "Your Stamp Supports Scouting" in the postage area, a proven fundraising tactic that subtly encourages donors to cover mailing costs, thereby reducing the council's overhead.
Leveraging Reciprocity (Partner Coupons)
In direct response marketing, providing an upfront gift triggers the psychological principle of reciprocity. I designed this perforated coupon card, featuring discounts from local corporate sponsors,to be inserted into the mailings. This not only incentivizes immediate giving but also reinforces the Boy Scouts' strong, mutually beneficial ties to local community businesses.
Donor Identity & Social Proof (Bumper Sticker)
A branded sticker does more than add tactile bulk to an envelope (which is proven to increase open rates), it turns a one-time donor into a passive brand ambassador. By designing a badge that proudly declares "I Support Our Youth," I gave donors a way to publicly signal their values, leveraging social proof to build broader community awareness for the Stonewall Jackson Area Council.
